Release Devices

Garage door release devices, also known as garage door emergency release or garage door manual release systems, are mechanisms that allow you to manually disengage the garage door from the automatic opener so the door can be opened or closed by hand. These garage door release solutions are essential for safety and convenience, especially during:

  • Power outages (when the opener won’t work)
  • Emergency situations (fire, mechanical failure)
  • Maintenance or repairs (when the opener needs to be disconnected)

Types of Garage Door Release Devices

Internal Release Cord
A red cord or handle hanging from the opener trolley inside the garage. Pulling it disconnects the door from the opener carriage, providing a quick manual release option.

External Emergency Release Kit
A keyed lock installed on the outside of the garage door. This emergency release allows manual operation from outside when there’s no other entry point.

Locking Handles with Cables
Common on older or manual doors, these systems use a handle and cable to disengage the door from the track, acting as a reliable garage door release method.
